I dread working out. Hate it. Working out always meant running/jogging/walking or doing a workout DVD.
Or at least I used to….
I’ve been listening to quite a few new health podcasts this year that have really hit heavy on weight training. Some wish they would have started sooner.
I’ve known it’s not true that weight training will automatically bulk you up, but I didn’t know where to do them. I didn’t have any equipment at home, there wasn’t much in the gym in my building and it was just not something that ever crossed my mind.
Once I started hearing about a new YMCA opening up near my house, I started to consider a gym membership. I’ve never had one, never saw the reason when I could work out in the comfort of my own home. Convenient, easy and quick.
Problem was, I can’t get into workout DVDs and now don’t have that much space since we moved.
I also find straight cardio doesn’t do a ton for me and knew I had to mix things up.
So a couple months ago I bit the bullet and got a YMCA membership. I figured I could work out during work to get me home earlier some nights and was looking forward to a new location opening up in my area.
For awhile I only stayed on the treadmill but a couple weeks ago I finally gave the machines a try. I was afraid I would do them wrong, people would look at me funny or whatever.
I knew I’d come to a place where I didn’t know what I was afraid of, but you have to start somewhere.
I’ve been using the machines the last few weeks and really enjoy them. I can’t think of the last time I enjoyed a workout. I guess I like the idea of running outside, but I struggle with it because I run out of breath easily (thanks exercise-induced asthma).
I know I need to be aware that the scale might not go down, and in fact, might go up. I know I might be hungrier. I know there’s a lot I have to learn with weight training, but what I do know is…I like it.
You can get a free wellness appointment at the Y, too (if you haven’t already). They’ll walk you through each machine. It’s such a huge help!

I haven’t yet! There’s a few machines I haven’t figured out so maybe that’s a good idea haha! Where do I ask?

You can ask anyone at the front desk, or someone in the wellness center should be able to help!
