Before the Spoilers
My first blog on Serial was mostly objective or informative. My goal was to introduce others to check out the podcast. I also am nervous to express my opinions in case I miss thought something or don’t want to sound like an idiot. Well now I’m fully in it. After episode 10, I finally feel something concrete. So heads up, if you haven’t listened to episode 10, you won’t want to read this.
Up until this point I’ve been unsure of everything in the case. How could Adnan be completely innocent when Jay had this long elaborate story? Or, how could Adnan be so calm when Jay has basically given him over to the police? There’s just no way an innocent person can just let someone do that to them…right?
All this time these are the questions that have stuck with me when I start to really think Adnan’s innocent. Deep down I want to believe he’s innocent and Sarah’s work will uncover the truth. But then there is a twist, theory or something that still makes me believe “eh, he had to be involved.”
I’ve always thought Jay had way more involvement than he admits, which obviously is a lot already. Plus he had a couple hours in interrogation with the detectives before they started recording so WHO knows what happened there.
And Then Episode 10
Up unit episode 10 I couldn’t really find anything that was concrete. Nothing that even would help as a solution. Then the episode showed me that he was somewhat judged by some by his heritage, and then also, he was screwed. Whether he’s guilty or not, I don’t think he didn’t get a fair trial. I could go over all the details but they all come to the same point. It was like the perfect storm happened to his disadvantage.
And something hit me. You know how my one draw back “why isn’t he totally trashing Jay?” He did’t trash Cristina Gutierrez really either. He had a few negative things to say but all in all he has respect and admiration for her.
Maybe he’s at peace with it all and that’s why he’s so calm. It has been 15 years and his prison doesn’t sound as bad as other places. Cable TV, he handles his own food….I’m sure he’s come to terms.
But either way I think he was screwed on his trials. Gutierrez I think at one point was one hell of a lawyer, but something happened and the ball was dropped when her health started to deteriorate. Big time. Not just for the Syeds but for others. If you Google her name the money controversy is what pops up first.
So I finally feel like I know one thing. Even if he is guilty. Even if it’s all true. I feel like parts of the trial were just shady. Not fair. That’s where I am right now on this.
What do you think? I want to hear it all! Even if you disagree!
