Let ‘Em At It

When I was about 14, maybe 13, my little brother and I fought. A lot. He’s about five years younger than me so we were typical siblings and we beat the crap out of each other from when I was about 11 to 14.

Fighting ranged from screaming, punching, hair pulling, and all things siblings do. We were quite ruthless. I’ll just say he was an evil child. He isn’t evil now, that I’m aware of. We have fun.

Well, it got to a point where my mom went in for a doctor’s appointment and asked for his opinion on how to get us to chill out.

His answer?

“Let them at it!”

I’m sure that wasn’t the easiest thing for my mom, but she went with it.

So about a week after she went, of course, we got into a fight. Well in this fight, he decided to kick me. So in defense, I blocked it. In my block, his toe met my hand perfectly enough…..to break it.

He whined and cried that it was broken, moped around, army crawled around the house, etc. My mom didn’t believe him at first, but after a few days of him not giving up his act she realized there was probably something wrong.

So around a week after my mom met with the doctor, she takes in my limping little brother.

“What happened, Big Ed?” he asked.

“My sister broke my toe.”

He had to be dying laughing inside.

And sure enough, it was broke.  Perfect timing too during his basketball season.

But you know what? I really don’t remember fighting much after I turned 14 and went to high school. There more more important things though, like boys, gossip and new friends.

So parents, I say let your kids at it. Let them learn themselves.
